Nearly all clinicians encounter the diagnosis of Social Anxiety Disorder on a regular basis, but many find themselves stuck in knowing how to help their clients make active changes in their lives. This workshop will help you think creatively to assist clients to create meaningful change while increasing skills to manage their anxiety in social settings.
DASC Chicago welcomes Zinal Patel, LCSW and Becky Martin, LPC, who have expertise in the assessment and treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder.
Zinal Patel is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at DASC. Ms. Patel earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago, and completed her Master’s degree in Social Work from California State University, Bakersfield, specializing in Gerontology and Medical Social Work. Ms. Patel works predominantly with adults who experience a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, OCD, and relationship issues.
Becky Martin is a Licensed Professional Counselor at DASC. Ms. Martin graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology and subsequently earned Master of Science degree in Clinical-Counseling Psychology from Illinois State University. Ms. Martin has experience working with adults and children who present with a variety of mood, anxiety, and personality disorders. Ms. Martin has training in CBT and DBT and has worked in a variety of mental health settings ranging from hospitals to outpatient care.
Ms. Patel and Ms. Martin currently co-lead a Social Anxiety group at DASC.
This 3-hour intensive training will offer clinicians an introduction to using CBT and exposure therapy to treat social anxiety in adults. Participants will learn the CBT Model for Social Anxiety, how to create exposures that target specific elements of the model, and how to adapt treatment for groups using Hofmann and Otto's protocol. Participants will learn how to incorporate client's values and teach skills such as attentional retraining in order to make treatment most effective. Participants will also engage in an interactive exposure exercise during the training in order to gain practice in applying concepts.
This introductory workshop is designed to help participants:
1. List symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder and differentiate it from other anxiety disorders.
2. Explain the CBT model for Social Anxiety Disorder.
3. Create treatment plans based on exposure therapy to target specific elements of social anxiety disorder.
4. Integrate client-specific values into the development of exposures.
